Spray Foam Insulation Experts

Spray Foam Insulation Services in Plano, TX

Traditional insulation slows the movement of heat, but it does very little to stop the movement of air. In a North Texas home, that distinction shows up on every summer utility bill. Spray foam insulation combines both jobs in one product, sealing gaps and cracks as it expands while delivering strong R-value per inch across walls, rim joists, and roof decks.

At Trotter Air Services, we have been solving comfort and efficiency problems in Plano, TX since 1970. Three generations of our family have worked in North Texas attics and mechanical rooms, and we bring an HVAC-first perspective to every spray foam project we take on.

Air and Heat, One Product

Why Spray Foam Insulation Belongs in Certain North Texas Homes

Cellulose and fiberglass are excellent thermal materials, but they do not stop air leakage on their own. Every gap around a top plate, every seam at a rim joist, and every penetration through a wall cavity is a path that unconditioned air will take when there is a pressure difference between inside and outside. In a Texas summer, that pressure difference is constant and the air movement is constant with it.

The Case for Foam

Spray foam expands into gaps and cures into a solid layer that stops air movement and provides thermal resistance in the same step. That combination is why we recommend it for specific applications where traditional insulation cannot do the whole job on its own.

Where spray foam does its best work:

  • Rim joists and band joists - The seam between the foundation and the framing is one of the leakiest parts of most homes. A closed-cell foam application here stops air infiltration that batt insulation cannot address.
  • Cathedral ceilings and roof decks - In unvented attic assemblies, foam applied to the underside of the roof deck brings the attic inside the thermal envelope, which is especially useful when ductwork and HVAC equipment live in the attic.
  • Bonus rooms and knee walls - Rooms over garages and behind knee walls are notorious for uneven temperatures. Foam addresses both the thermal loss and the air leakage in those tricky assemblies.
  • Crawl spaces and encapsulated basements - Foam on foundation walls creates a durable air and moisture barrier that pairs well with a properly sealed and conditioned crawl space.
  • Around penetrations and hard-to-reach cavities - Small applications of foam in wiring chases, plumbing openings, and inaccessible framing bays deliver outsized results because those are the leaks most often missed by other materials.

Foam Is Not Always the Right Answer

We do not recommend spray foam on every project. Open attic floors are almost always better served by blown-in fiberglass or cellulose at a lower cost per square foot. Where foam earns its place is in assemblies that need air sealing performance in addition to thermal resistance, and in geometry where blown-in and batt materials cannot deliver good coverage.

Honest Recommendations

Not Sure Whether Foam Is Right for Your Home?

Because we approach insulation as HVAC professionals, our recommendations depend on how your home actually performs, not on which product has the highest margin. In some homes, spray foam in strategic locations is the right call. In others, blown-in insulation and targeted air sealing get you nearly the same result at a lower cost. We will tell you what we see and what we would do if it were our home.

Foam Types

Open-Cell and Closed-Cell Spray Foam

Spray foam comes in two primary forms, and each has its place. The right choice depends on the assembly, the exposure, and the performance goals for the project.

crop_square cloud

Open-Cell Foam

Open-cell foam expands aggressively and cures into a soft, flexible material with a lower R-value per inch than closed cell. It is well suited to interior applications like attic roof decks and interior walls, where depth is available and air sealing plus sound attenuation are priorities.

  • Effective air barrier at sufficient thickness
  • Notable sound-dampening qualities
  • Lower cost per board-foot than closed cell
  • Best for interior, protected applications

Closed-Cell Foam

Closed-cell foam is denser, delivers a higher R-value per inch, and resists moisture. It is the right choice for rim joists, crawl spaces, foundation walls, and any application where structural rigidity or moisture resistance matters as much as thermal performance.

  • Higher R-value per inch than open cell
  • Acts as a vapor retarder at appropriate thickness
  • Adds rigidity to the assembly
  • Preferred for below-grade and exposed applications
Our Process

Our Spray Foam Process

Spray foam has to be installed correctly to deliver the performance the material is capable of. Here is how we approach every project:

search
Step 1: Assessment

We evaluate the assembly, existing insulation, ductwork placement, and moisture conditions. Where the home has HVAC equipment in the attic, we discuss whether a conditioned-attic approach makes sense given the equipment and duct configuration.

engineering
Step 2: Scope and Product

We recommend open-cell or closed-cell foam based on the assembly, the R-value target, and the moisture conditions. We describe the scope in plain terms so you know exactly what will be sprayed and to what thickness.

shield
Step 3: Preparation

We mask surfaces that should not be sprayed, protect HVAC equipment and duct openings, and confirm ventilation clearances. Foam is a chemical process, and preparation is the difference between clean results and a mess.

Step 4: Application

Foam is applied in controlled passes to the specified thickness. Because foam expands rapidly, application technique controls the outcome. Our applicators are trained and equipped to deliver consistent thickness across the entire area.

schedule
Step 5: Cure and Reoccupancy

Foam requires a cure and off-gassing period before the area is reoccupied. We follow manufacturer recommendations for ventilation and reoccupancy times, and we let you know exactly when the space is ready to return to.

Step 6: Verification

We verify thickness at multiple points, confirm coverage in the target areas, and clean up thoroughly. If there are any code requirements for an ignition barrier or thermal barrier over the foam, we address those as part of the scope.

HVAC Integration

Foam Insulation and Your HVAC System

Air sealing changes how a home behaves. When leakage drops meaningfully, HVAC sizing, ventilation, and humidity all need to be considered together. That is where our HVAC background matters.

Points we watch when foam enters the picture:

  • Conditioned-attic decisions - Spraying the roof deck brings the attic inside the thermal envelope. That helps ductwork and equipment perform, and it also changes ventilation requirements. We evaluate the whole assembly before recommending it.
  • Humidity behavior - Tighter homes hold humidity longer. Pairing foam work with a properly sized whole-home humidity solution keeps indoor conditions in a comfortable range year round.
  • Filtration and IAQ pair well with a tight envelope - With less unfiltered outdoor air infiltrating, an upgraded air filtration system and UV light treatments do more of the work they were designed for.
  • Equipment sizing after envelope improvements - After significant air sealing, the home's cooling and heating load may drop enough that different-sized equipment is appropriate at the next replacement. Combined with regular AC maintenance and furnace maintenance, that is where long-term savings show up.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Spray Foam Insulation in Plano, TX

Open-cell foam is softer, lower density, and typically less expensive per board foot. Closed-cell foam is denser, has a higher R-value per inch, and provides moisture resistance. The right choice depends on the assembly, the required R-value, and the moisture exposure of the location.

Yes. Properly installed and fully cured spray foam is inert and does not off-gas at levels of concern in the finished home. The critical piece is proper installation, correct mix ratios, and following manufacturer guidance on reoccupancy time before the space is returned to normal use.

We follow manufacturer recommendations for occupant clearance during spraying and initial cure. For most residential projects, occupants stay out of the immediate work area during spraying and for a defined reoccupancy period. We tell you exactly what to expect in advance so the schedule works for your household.

Not necessarily. A conditioned-attic approach that sprays foam on the underside of the roof deck can be a strong solution when HVAC equipment and ductwork are located in the attic. In other homes, blown-in insulation on the attic floor with targeted air sealing achieves nearly the same benefit at a lower cost. We evaluate your assembly before recommending an approach.

A tighter home holds humidity longer, which can be a benefit in winter and something to manage in summer. Pairing foam projects with an appropriately sized whole-home dehumidifier keeps indoor humidity in a comfortable and healthy range. We factor humidity into every recommendation.

Cost varies with the type of foam, the thickness required, the size of the area, and the accessibility of the space. Because those variables move so much, we provide a written quote after evaluating your project. Call for a quote.
